Secure your journeys in the mountains: snow tires and mandatory winter equipment
As of November 1, regulations concerning the equipment of vehicles to cope with winter conditions become mandatory in several regions of France. The aim is to improve road safety during the winter months, when snow and ice are commonplace. Here’s an overview of the main changes and issues involved.
📌 What are the new obligations?
- Retarding equipment: From now on, all vehicles in mountainous areas must be fitted with either winter tires or snow chains. This applies particularly to mountain departments where weather conditions can be uncertain.
- Geographical zones: Certain geographical zones are designated as “restricted traffic zones”. Drivers should check whether their route passes through these zones and comply with the new standards.
- Compliance checks: Law enforcement agencies will be able to carry out checks to ensure that vehicles comply with the new standards. In the event of non-compliance, penalties may be applied.
❄️ Why are these changes necessary?
There are many reasons for these measures:
- Road safety: Winter tires offer better grip and shorter braking distances in cold conditions. This helps reduce the number of accidents on icy or snow-covered roads.
- Driver preparation: By imposing this equipment, legislation encourages drivers to prepare adequately for winter journeys, thus reducing incidents due to unforeseen weather conditions.
- Smoother traffic flow: More equipped vehicles keep traffic flowing, even in adverse weather conditions.
🌍 Which areas are concerned?
The measure applies to the following French mountain ranges:
- 🏔 Alps
- 🏔 Massif Central
- 🏔 Jura
- 🏔 Vosges
- 🏔 Pyrenees
The communes concerned are designated by the departmental prefectures and indicated by new signs:
“B26 – Chains or winter tires obligatory” at the entrance to the zones, and “End of obligation” at their exit.
ℹ️ The full list of communes concerned is available on prefecture websites or on the official road safety website.
🛠️ What equipment is mandatory?
You will need to equip your vehicle with one of the following devices:
🔹 Winter tires
- 3PMSF (3 Peak Mountain Snow Flake) marking mandatory
- Or M+S (Mud and Snow) tires until November 2024
🔹 Removable anti-skid devices
- Snow chains (for at least 2-wheel drive)
- Or approved snow socks
⚠️ 4-season tires are not always sufficient. They must carry the 3PMSF marking to comply with regulations.
👥 Who is concerned?
This obligation applies to :
- Light vehicles (passenger cars)
- Utilities
- Motor homes
- Trucks without trailer or semi-trailer
Trucks with trailers or semi-trailers must have snow chains ready to fit on at least 2 drive wheels, even if they are already fitted with winter tires.
📅 When does the rule apply?
The obligation period runs each year from :
November 1 to March 31
Even if there is no snow or ice on the road, equipment is still compulsory in marked areas.
🚨 What are the penalties for non-compliance?
In the event of non-compliance, you are liable to :
- 135 fine
- Vehicle immobilization in the event of dangerous weather conditions
But beyond the penalty, it’s your safety and the safety of others that’s at stake. A poorly equipped vehicle can become a danger for everyone on the road.
✅ Why it’s a good thing
- 🔒 Greater safety in inclement weather
- 🚫 Fewer blockages on mountain roads
- 🚧 Fewer accidents due to loss of grip
- 🛣 Better winter traffic flow, especially during major departures to ski resorts
